A World Cup Visualization

I admit, I was never much of a soccer fan until this year’s world cup. All credit goes to my girlfriend, who happens to be the biggest Germany fan this side of the Atlantic (at least it seems that way). Here’s a graphic visualization showing the winners over the past 50+ years, displaying an interesting structure and beauty to it. There are a few outliers here, most notably FRA in 1998 and ITA in the last Cup, but I’d say there’s a good chance the relentless German squad can make this chart come true to form over the next week.
