Locals and Tourists

Jul 28, 2010

There is an ongoing war each day in major urban areas. No, not a war of violence — but a war of locals and tourists. I witness it frequently; the smug look of locals towards the tourists who pack the corners of downtown Chicago, while haphazardly snapping photographs at the skyscrapers above with no regard for those around them.

The Geotagger’s World Atlas uses Flickr and Picasa search APIs to determine photo locations. While not totally surprised at the density areas of these maps, they are certainly cool to look at. Blue areas are locals, measured if they have taken photos in the same area over a range of time. Red areas are tourists, those who only have taken pictures during a short time frame. Here’s Chicago; that small, bright red dot up north happens to be Wrigley Field.
